The newly constructed Warszawa Zachodnia railway station is redefining modern transport infrastructure with its cutting-edge architecture and seamless integration of advanced sustainable technologies. The largest BIPV installation in Europe, covering an area of 12,000 m2 and generating 1.1 MWp, enables an annual reduction of 650 tons of CO2 emissions.
ROOF PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULES WITH HEATING FUNCTION: 5,145 m2
SKYLIGHT PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULES: 1,012 m2
SKYLIGHT PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULES WITH BACKLIGHTING FUNCTION: 1,436 m2
SKYLIGHT GLASS SETS WITH BACKLIGHTING FUNCTION: 2,416 m2
SKYLIGHT GLASS SETS: 2,105 m2
TOTAL AREA: 12,100 m2
TOTAL PHOTOVOLTAIC INSTALLATION CAPACITY: 1,1 MWp
To achieve the investor’s sustainability targets, at least 75% of the roofing across eight platforms required energy-efficient technology. With 35,000m² of roof coverage, 12,000m² of BIPV will generate 30% of the total energy needed to power the transportation complex.
Custom-engineered BIPV solutions were tailored to complement the station’s architectural vision while ensuring technical excellence. The integration of photovoltaics within the structure not only enhances energy efficiency but also elevates the station’s visual appeal, creating a sleek and futuristic atmosphere for commuters and visitors.
The architecture of Warsaw West Station must embody timelessness. Railway structures and buildings should serve multiple generations while remaining unique, distinctive, and characteristic of railway infrastructure. Railway architecture is both an art and a "brand," and Warsaw West Station represents a world-class investment.
Designed by DWAA ARCHITEKCI, Warszawa Zachodnia exemplifies the role of innovation in public space development. The architects emphasised the importance of blending technology with aesthetics to create an infrastructure that is both functional and visually striking.
"From the very beginning, we suggested to the investor the incorporation of renewable energy sources at the station. We conducted economic analyses demonstrating the significant cost savings the investor would achieve."
Lead the Path to a Sustainable Future with BIPV
Australian developers and government agencies have a unique opportunity to reshape urban infrastructure by integrating Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) into new and existing projects. Instead of traditional building materials, BIPV offers energy-generating solutions that reduce reliance on the grid, lower operational costs, and contribute to net-zero targets.
By incorporating solar-active facades, skylights, and roofing, we can create self-sufficient buildings that maximise efficiency while maintaining architectural appeal. Let’s build smarter, greener cities—the future of sustainable development starts now.
